That New Animal

a picture book; illustrations by Pierre Pratt; FSG/Frances Foster, 2005

FudgeFudge does not like that new animal. Marshmallow does not like it either. Not even a little bit. It came a week ago, and it doesn't seem to be going away. "Do you smell that new animal smell?" complains FudgeFudge. "It's very different from a dog smell."

ALA Notable video/DVD, narrated by the author with ridiculous barking and silly voices, available from Scholastic/Weston Woods for school and libraries, and for families on the Arnie the Doughnut DVD.

"Jenkins...is quietly making a career...as one of the freshest, most evocative, and most accessible picture-book writers of family life. Pratt's paintings are suffused with warm tones and furry-textured brush strokes that comfort even during the dogs' anxious moments. The book's unerring identification of the sore spots of dethronement...will definitely strike chords of recognition in young audiences."  — The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, starred review

"The kind of resonant and quotable text that youngsters will demand to hear again and again." — Publishers Weekly, starred review
